The Jelly Bean Factory® – Cloetta

The Global Renewal of The Jelly Bean Factory®

The look and feel of the global The Jelly Bean Factory® brand was refined with streamlined branding and by accentuating the brand’s key elements: huge flavours and fun. The use of digital imaging (CGI) in design and illustrations brought the end result to a delicious new level.

The Global Renewal of The Jelly Bean Factory®

Over 20 Years in the Happiness Business

The Jelly Bean Factory® was founded in Dublin in 1998 by father and son, Peter and Richard Cullen. They had one guiding principle in their operation: to bring sensational flavours to people across the globe. Today, the brand is owned by Cloetta and the products are sold in over 50 countries around the world.

The Jelly Bean Factory® has three flavour mixes in it’s product portfolio, but the number of different packaging formats at the moment is over twenty all around the world.

Refined Branding – and Lots of Flavour

The project started with a clear vision of focusing on one main flavor mix, The 36 Huge Flavours, and the other two variants, 18 Fruit Flavours and 9 Sour Flavours, would be build based around it to strengthen the overall brand image.

Through in-depth research and visual testing, we were able to establish key elements of The Jelly Bean Factory brand that were essential to product recognition and shelf impact. We broke down the design, stripped off everything unnecessary and crystallized the rest into a powerful, graphic, playful and recognizable The Jelly Bean Factory design.

The global renewal of the brand also covered the logo change.

The logo was simplified by refining the typography.

The Jelly Bean Factory 36 Huge Flavours

The Jelly Beans are in their best when one grabs a handful of them in ones mouth. In the illustrations we emphasized the swirl that winds playfully around an assortment of delicious beans.

All Eyes on Beans

The look of the Jelly Beans needed to match their intensive flavour, and design turned out to be one of the fun challenges of the project. We created the natural, colourful look of the beans digitally using CGI technology. The right look and feel was discovered though exploration – and most of all – through diligent tasting of the delicious products.

CGI Packshots

Instead of traditional printed and folded model packaging, we used 3D modeling to create the packaging mock-ups to examine them in detail from all angles during the design process. This sped up the project, as the client got to see realistic visuals of all nearly twenty different packaging formats. The lacquer finish of the packages was also studied using the virtual models.

The carefully made 3D models were rendered into final high-quality product images that the client had available from the beginning of The Jelly Bean Factory re-launch.
